Wisdom Tooth Food Doesn’t Have To Suck

Home-made super quick frozen banana yoghurt

I’m just going to admit it.  I am an AWFUL patient.

Honestly.  Sometimes I think I’m not a real girl.  Ladies are supposed to deal with moderate illnesses stoically, right?  While I’m actually pretty good at dealing with initial pain – injections, piercings, etc – constant, dull pain drives me crazy.  And I make sure I let everyone around me know about it.

When I am a little ill, the one thing that puts a temporary stop to my whining is a good feed.  Chicken noodle soup for colds, chocolate for headaches and a toasted ham and cheese for a twisted ankle.

Last week, I had a wisdom tooth removed.  Although it was only a singular tooth, just one little tooth, after The Operation I managed to wail my way through the better part of three days, knocking back more Solpadeine than was probably healthy.

Or necessary.

Knowing that eating was not going to be a straight-forward placebo after my wisdom tooth op, I had armed myself (well, it would be more accurate to say I had armed Niall) with a handful of recipes for soft, but not gross, food to help get us through the recovery period.

It’s probably one of the smartest things I’ve ever done.  We got through those torturous few days post-op on a diet of delicious dishes.  All which happened to be mashed.

And, hey, I promise getting your wisdom teeth out isn’t actually all that bad.  As long as you have lots of nice soft things to eat.

My wonderful friend and co-columnist Aoife Barry sent me this recipe for frozen banana yoghurt on Choosing Raw.  It is so easy to make and it really soothes a sore mouth.  Wisdom tooth problems or not, this recipe is a winner for anyone, anytime, anywhere.  It’s delicious.  And so easy to make!

Have a look after the jump for the recipe, as well as a few other ideas for Wisdom Tooth Food That Doesn’t Suck.

If you’re getting your wisdom teeth out soon, here are a few great recipes that will tide you over until you reach the point where you can actually chew again.

And for that lovely frozen banana yoghurt, suitable at any time of the year, in sickness and in health.

What you need for Frozen Banana Yoghurt (enough for 2 generous bowls)

2 to 3 bananas

About 1/2 a 450g tub of natural yoghurt (Glenisk preferably, because it’s delish)

1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

2 tablespoons of ground almonds

*The banana and yoghurt are really all you need, but the optional vanilla essence and almonds add a lovely flavour to the whole thing.  Feel free to add your own favourite banana-flavour combinations.*

Peel your bananas and put them in a zip-lock bag and place in your freezer.

Once completely frozen, put the bananas into a food processor.  Whizz along with the yoghurt, vanilla and almonds until you have a lovely smooth frozen yoghurt.  You can change the quantity of yoghurt to get your preferred texture.

That’s it!  Done.  You’ve made your own frozen yoghurt.  Hurray!

TUNE

When you’re not feeling well, sometimes nothing can fix it better than Disney.  And more specifically, The Jungle Book.  Cry!

  1. If only you’d written this last week! Jon got one of his wisdom teeth out on Monday evening. He insisted on burgers for dinner as “mince is soft”.

He wouldn’t eat banana but I could’ve changed it to the marvellous Irish strawberries that have just arrived on the shelves.

Don’t worry about the pain killers, himself is downing Neurofen Plus at a great rate. I didn’t even get interrogated when buying it from the chemist, once I told them it was for an extracted tooth she practically threw it at me!

Hope you’re feeling better after your dentist trails and are back to chowing down on solid food.

    • Hey Joanna, hope your main man is feeling better now! I’m not too bad.

The strawberries would definitely work, with the almonds and vanilla essence too! I’ll have to do that the next time I get strawberries. Yum!

  2. Mmmm, froyo! Love the idea of the added almondy flavour, too. Weirdly, I don’t like bananas unless they’ve been in the fridge, so this is a winner for me, and it’s nearly two years since I had my wisdom teeth out!

  3. mmmm that sounds great – and wonderfully soothing. For a twisted ankle I find a ham and cheese toasty combined with a pint of Guinness works wonderfully. I made a lovely cardomon cream – which has large amounts of yogurt and is set like panna cotta. Will blog soon but not soon enough for old toothy

  4. oh and thanks for including the tom kha gai! filling while still being pretty liquid

    • Hi Lucy! The Tom Kha Gai is delicious. We were lazy and ordered it from Camile. Twas a godsend on the day! So tasty and easy to eat for someone with a banjaxed jaw :)

  5. Made this morning, not because I have wisdom tooth issues, but because it looked like a totally yum breakfast food. Was super good :)
